I'm building a tall circular tower in the center of my castle, and I'm building a spiral staircase along the outside of the tower. However, I'm having trouble coming up with an aesthetically pleasing design for the staircase. Here's a top down view of the tower:
Anyone ever built a staircase like this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Edit: I'll add some screenshots in a few minutes.

You could just make a 2x2 tower thingy in the center and put ladders on all sides of that.
You heard that, green and red.#3Aug 27, 2010

@ Catmando, that would be incredibly dull.
Here's the screens:

http://imgur.com/qw3Kb.jpgI didn't embed them because they're pretty big. As you can see, the current partial staircase is kind of a mess.
Also, the castle is nowhere near finished, so don't judge it too harshly.

I've made towers like this before

I think he wants a staircase on the outside. The only real way to make it look less chunky is to either make the tower thicker or use half-blocks.

I've scrapped the exterior staircase and am building one inside the tower. It looks cleaner, and requires less blocks. Any other suggestions for my castle are welcome. If you look at the screens, the building on the right is a forge/warehouse, and the left is a wheat/cacti farm. Behind the tower I'll be building a mob farm. Might also move my cobblestone factory to the top of the forge/warehouse.

If you are still working on the tower's inside stairs, what I usually do is keep the tower's circular shape on the outside, but square it off on the inside with glass or something fancy. So...

You know what I wonder... How's he keeping the snow off those walls. I don't see any torches.
But why do you want the stairs on the outside, it's cold out there. Have you seen the ocean lately? It's frozen solid!

I used nbtedit to turn off the snowfall. Kinda angry at myself since it feels a little like cheating. Everything else is 100% legit though.

Aww... I really like the snow on my map. But why not just play on a not snow map? But also, if you build blocks that aren't a full block, snow won't fall on them. If you ever wanna turn it back on later. It won't fall on top of signs and ladders and the various stair options.
Also, did you find a way to turn it off only over your castle, or is it off everywhere?

It's turned off everywhere. When I first started this map, I loved the snow. But after a couple of weeks it became a nuisance, and at that point I was too well established to start over on a normal map.
Fun Fact: If I wander to a distant chunk away from my base, the snow is completely gone and it's like a normal map.
